From the likes of the Indian Prime Minister to the comedy king Kapil Sharma, Bollywood Star Salman Khan and the globally popular music video titled ‘Selfie’ by the popular American DJ duo ‘The Chainsmokers’. All of them have one thing in common; that is the display and the support of Selfies. Considering the influence of these famous personalities on latest trends in the society, their support of the so called ‘Selfie ’ through various mediums has brought about a ‘Selfie Trend’ in the society, not just in India but Globally.
The craze of taking selfies has lead many people to their tragic deaths. According to a report, India accounts for about fifty percent of selfie-related deaths globally. At least 27 people in the world died taking selfies in 2015. In the same year, three college students died in Kosikala near Mathura while trying to take a selfie in front of a speeding train. An analysis - proactively titled “Me, Myself and My Killfie: Characterizing and Preventing Selfie Deaths” – found that, out of a total of 127 reported selfie deaths from March 2014 to September, “a whopping 76 deaths occurred in India alone.
Although, all these incidents occur mostly because of the carelessness of the victims, the role played by these famous personalities is considerable as the trends created by them are followed throughout the country. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s selfie craze to connect with the common man and world leaders; to comedian Kapil Sharma doing the same to connect with his audience; and bollywood star Salman Khan promoting selfies, especially though the “Selfie Le Le Re” song in one of his movies; and another famous track titled ‘Selfie’ by the famous DJ duo ‘The Chainsmokers’ , all these personalities are impeached these contributions to ‘Selfie-Deaths’.
This petition is aimed at requesting these personalities to apologize to India and the world for promoting the deadly ‘Selfie Trend’. Their position in the society demands them to be more responsible and careful of their actions.
